What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

The neuropsychological evaluation is an assessment of cognitive and behavioral functioning using a variety of standardized tests that are sensitive to brain functioning.  The tests are presented orally, in writing, or in other formats where the individual is asked to perform tasks such as answering questions, learning, figuring out problems, and drawing.

Abilities in the following areas are typically assessed:

·        Attention

·        Intellectual ability

·        Memory

·        Problem-solving and reasoning

·        Visuospatial abilities

·        Language

·        Motor functioning

·        Sensory functioning

·        Emotional functioning and personality

·        Academic skills

The neuropsychological evaluation is completed by a neuropsychologist.  A neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist who has specialty training understanding
the relationship of the brain to specific abilities.
